Kiyo's age isn't nec'ly implied by her fluency in Chinese, since even during the centuries of Shogunate (bakumatau) isolationism, Chinese was preserved in Japan as an elite/literary language-- cf. Kaneko and Junichiro speaking it between themselves, although historical drift probably would've made it sound a bit odd to Laurence etc., as if trying to speak English with a community who mainly knew it from reading Shakespeare.
