I wonder if it's worth noting that according to the page that this article links to (detailing the wall), anybody whose stone did not bounce back was doomed, as opposed to never returning to China. This would explain Gong Su's terror, and presumably, after he fled, Jing Chao presumed the others would die in the desert, and Gong Su assumed that Jing Chao and himself had got each others stones and fortunes mixed up.
