South America
It should be noted that at this point in time the exact borders of South America are unknown - the countries listed here are speculative based on the historical equivalents. In the Temeraire series, it is known that the Incans succeeded in repelling the Spanish Conquistadors. Little else is known; hence it is unknown exactly how far the Spanish managed to colonise, and whether any other indigenous peoples managed to escape colonial rule.
The grey area on the map above is an example of the current problems; historically, it was an area of land that was held by the Spanish in Peru before eventually being ceded to Brazil, but which was never controlled by the Incans. It is unclear whether this land is unexplored, held by the Incans, held by Brazil, or held by the Spanish via Rio De La Plata, should it exist, although it likely does, considering the presence of Chile.
