Biography[edit]
Richard Shipley was a convict sent to New South Wales, and chosen to accompany the British aviators hoping to find a pass through the Blue Mountains. In Britain, he had been a tailor, which was useful when Temeraire wanted silk robes embroidered for William Laurence. Shipley spoke some native Australian languages, and attempted to serve as a translator between the Britons and the natives.
