HMS Potentate is a large Dragon Transport Ship of Britain's Royal Navy. This frigate was most noted for her shipwreck off the coast of Japan's Chikuzen Province, and later intrusion into Nagasaki Harbour in 1812. She participated in several engagements during the Napoleonic Wars.

Potentate sailed to the Atlantic, and later entered Nagasaki Harbour in 1812. She later sailed to Guangzhou, China, and later set course for Spain and Portugal (the Iberian Peninsula), carrying Iskierka, Lily, Maximus, Dulcia, Nitidus, and possibly Arkady.

Origin of the Name

The word "potentate" (Late Latin potentātus: power, dominion) is a noun for "a person who possesses great power, as a sovereign, monarch, or ruler". It is also a synonym for "monarch" or "ruler".
