Biography

Barstowe rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to become captain of the HMS Shorewise by 1791.

As he was not gently born, Barstowe was amply conscious of his own lack of social graces. He took out his frustrations on those who made him feel his own lack of upbringing, including young officers such as William Laurence.
