FanArt Contest: Volly Catches a Cow

Every Friday a new piece of artwork from the fanart contest will be posted on this website!

Winner: Cary Shien — This illustration is based on my existing short story Feast or Famine, but I think I may reinterpret it as an illustration for the story of Volly’s very exciting opportunity to sire an egg (mentioned briefly at the end of Empire of Ivory). Or alternatively I might retell a bit of Feast or Famine from Volly’s perspective, and show life at the covert through his eyes.

Each of these weekly pieces of art will be a part of a small, Subterranean Press hardcover with a 16-page full color gallery, and it will include a total of 32 pieces, with about 20,000 words total of new fiction included. I will probably end up combining and writing slightly longer stories for more than one piece, but each one will at least get a drabble’s-worth to its name!

Sub Press will produce a limited edition of 400 leatherbound copies signed by me (probably around $45), and somewhere between 1000-2000 hardcovers (around $20-25). And I will eventually be putting up the stories themselves online at least once the book sells out, so if these are out of your range, do not fear! You will get to read the stories! The book should hopefully be out before the end of this year, but we’ll see.

Until next week!

    • The book will likely sell out online at Sub Press before copies get distributed to bookstores. So you’ll have to order at the Sub Press website when it’s available to do so. :)

I stopped by the Subterranean Press site and I found that Empire of Ivory is available for pre-order and paid for that… but I don’t seen any other Novik pre-orders. Am I missing something?

  2. wow!!! awesome piece of art!!! Is that maximus and temeraire (Lung Tien Xiang) in the background?

  3. Artist captured personalities of the characters greatly! The composition is well thought out and adds humur to the piece. :)
